Louis Armstrong was an American Jazz Trumpeter and Singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.  Nicknamed Satchmo or Pops.  He was a foundational influence in Jazz and an influential Singer and a great improviser and he was one of the first truly popular African-American's influence extends well beyond Jazz Music.
