Rare Earth is an American Rock Band from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1960 by Gil Bridge (Saxophone, Flute, Backing Vocals), Peter Hoorebeke (Drums, Lead Vocals), Kenny James (Keyboards), John Persh (Bass, Trombone, Backing Vocals, and Rod Richards (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals).  Although not the first white band signed to Motown Records, Rare Earth was the first big hit-making act signed by Motown that consisted only of white members.
