Red Garland was an American Modern Jazz Pianist, known for his work as a Bandleader and during the 1950s with Miles Davis, he helped popularize the block chord style of piano playing. His music style mixed together the usual influences of his generation (Nat Cole, Bud Powell, and Ahmad Jamal) into his own distinctive approach, and he also worked by backing such major players as Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Roy Eldridge. He became a member of the classic Miles Davis Quintet (1955-1958). In 1958, he formed his own Trio. The Trio also recorded as a Quintet with John Coltrane and Donald Byrd.
