Larry Young was an American Jazz Organist from Newark, New Jersey.  He was the one of pioneered a Modal Jazz approach to The Hammond B-3 (in contrast to Jimmy Smith's Soul Jazz Style).  If Jimmy Smith was the Charlie Parker of the Organ, Larry Young was its John Coltrane.  One of the Great Innovators of the mid-to late '60s.  He also played Soul Jazz, among other Styles and played with various R&B Bands in the 1950s before gaining Jazz experience with Jimmy Forrest, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and Tommy Turrentine.  His music began to show the marked influence of John Coltrane.  He recorded many times as part of a Trio with guitarist Grant Green and drummer Elvin Jones.  He also played with Miles Davis in 1969, John McLaughlin in 1970 and Tony Williams in the early '70s.  In March 1978, he checked into the hospital for stomach pains and died there on March 3, 1978.  However, the actual cause of his dead is unclear.
